Keep up to date with all the latest news happening in school at the moment.
In preparation for the Year 6 SATs, Owls and Eagles have started yoga sessions every Thursday.
Yoga is proven to have a great impact on the concentration, behaviour, mental fitness and emotional well-being of children, which will enable our year 6 classes to have clear minds and to use relaxation techniques in the run up to the SATs.
Further to the communication sent to you on February 22nd, 2018, please can we remind all year R, 1 and 2 parents of the Phonics Fun workshop being held for parents, which will take place on Monday 12th March at 3.30pm in the school hall.
Mrs Oakes will deliver the session and this will include:
If you would like to attend, the session will last approximately 1 hour and there will be a free crèche for your children. There is no need to book for this, please just turn up. Refreshments will be provided.
We hope to see you there!
Newtown CE Primary School braved the snow and cold weather to come together to put on a fantastic event in honor of World Book Day on Thursday 1st March 2018.
Lots of different learning took place, centred around books, reading and creative writing; year 2 had particular fun creating humorously descriptive poems.
The Gruffalo arrived just before lunch to read his story to Year R. He also help Councillor Diane Furlong, the Mayor Elect of Gosport, present the £10,000 cheque to Mrs Howlett and the children on behalf of the Big Lottery Fund for our Community Bookshop and reading initiatives.
The kitchen team were fabulous, creating a Harry Potter themed lunch that consisted of Weasley's Whizz Bangers, Golden Snitches, Dragon Claws and Gobin Fruits, all followed by Harry's Spellbinding Cookies...Delicious!
Thank you all so much for all the effort that went into the amazing costumes, facepaint and hairstyles!
The whole school joined in a Collective Worship assembly at the end of the day so that we could celebrate all the different book characters we had been transformed into! A round of applause was particularly given to the Year 6 teaching team for the immense effort in transforming into the Mr Men and Little Miss characters.
In preparation for our World Book Day celebrations, Year R held a magical story-telling evening on Wednesday 28th February 2018.
Children, parents, staff and teddy bears came back to school in their pyjamas and listened to stories before bedtime. Children read to their grown-ups and the grown-ups read to the children. The fairy lights, hot chocolate and cookies, created a truly magical atmosphere for all to enjoy.
Please note there will be a Parents Information Evening on Thursday 15th March 2018, regarding the Year 2 SATs tests.
There will be two sessions available for Year 2 parents only: One at 3:15pm and one at 5:15pm. Parents are able to choose to come to one session, there is no need to pre-book your space.
We look forward to seeing all Year 2 parents there.
Following continued concerns about the impending weather conditions, we have taken advice on the forecast for the rest of the evening and overnight; and have been in contact with Hampshire Constabulary regarding their warning to not travel unless absolutely necessary. We have consequently been advised there will be very cold conditions overnight with expected snowfall, where below freezing temperatures and some further snow will mean conditions are forecast to be hazardous.
We have therefore made the difficult decision to close the school on Friday 2nd March 2018. This decision has not been taken lightly and in consultation with other local schools.
We have really appreciated your messages of support throughout today, saying how much you have valued us doing all we can to stay open as a school today and showing your understanding for the range of risks we have to assess and take into account given the weather forecast.
Today has shown the strength of Newtown CE Primary School. The pupils have been an absolute credit to themselves, to you and to the school, embracing world book day, looking after each other in the unusual weather conditions and staying focused and engaged with their learning.
May I take this opportunity to thank you all for your support. The safeguarding of our children and staff is paramount and will continue to be so.
Mrs Howlett, Headteacher
A yellow weather warning for wind and snow has been upgraded to an amber warning from midday today. We have also sought advice on the forecast for the rest of the day and overnight; and have been in contact with Hampshire Constabulary. We have been advised there will be very cold conditions overnight with expected snowfall, where below freezing temperatures and some further snow will mean conditions are forecast to be hazardous.
Therefore we, along with our local schools expected to perform tomorrow, have made the difficult decision to withdraw from Rock Challenge and we will no longer perform on Friday night. This is a decision I have not taken lightly.
We are in contact with Rock Challenge UK and we will endeavour to rearrange our performance on another evening, where the tickets bought will be transferrable. I will ensure information about future performances will be given to you all as soon as possible.
May I take this opportunity to thank you all for your support. The safeguarding of our children and staff is paramount and will continue to be so.
Any decision regarding a potential school closure for tomorrow, Friday 2nd March, will be communicated to all parents by 7:30am tomorrow morning, but we will endeavour to make a decision later on today.
Thank you once again for your support.
Mrs Howlett, Headteacher
Should we have a significant snowfall or dangerous icy conditions overnight, we will inform all parents of any potential school closure by 8am via a parent mail message and a notice will be placed onto the school gates, on the school website and the local radio stations will be informed. Hampshire County Council will also be notified.
Otherwise the school will remain open and operate as normal.
All the children at Newtown C of E Primary School took part in a national Number Day on Friday 2nd February. The whole school worked in their house teams to solve mathematical problems and earn valuable house points.
We asked a few of the Year 6 children for some feedback and this is what they said:
Edward – I wish it was number day every Friday!
Archie – It was the most amazing maths lesson ever!
Ava – It was fun to do something different.
J’dynn – It’s good to spend time with people that are in our house
Riley – It was exciting to earn house points through maths
Harvey – Can we do it every day?
