Following continued concerns about the impending weather conditions, we have taken advice on the forecast for the rest of the evening and overnight; and have been in contact with Hampshire Constabulary regarding their warning to not travel unless absolutely necessary. We have consequently been advised there will be very cold conditions overnight with expected snowfall, where below freezing temperatures and some further snow will mean conditions are forecast to be hazardous.
We have therefore made the difficult decision to close the school on Friday 2nd March 2018. This decision has not been taken lightly and in consultation with other local schools.
We have really appreciated your messages of support throughout today, saying how much you have valued us doing all we can to stay open as a school today and showing your understanding for the range of risks we have to assess and take into account given the weather forecast.
Today has shown the strength of Newtown CE Primary School. The pupils have been an absolute credit to themselves, to you and to the school, embracing world book day, looking after each other in the unusual weather conditions and staying focused and engaged with their learning.
May I take this opportunity to thank you all for your support. The safeguarding of our children and staff is paramount and will continue to be so.
Mrs Howlett, Headteacher
