Keep up to date with all the latest news happening in school at the moment.
We are delighted to announce two new initiatives that Newtown C of E Primary School will be involved in:
Walktober will take place throughout the month of October. The pupils and staff will be walking whatever the weather is this October as part of International Walking Month. Hampshire County Council's My Journey team is encouraging the public and schools to walk whatever the weather. Just because it’s cold or raining, doesn’t mean we can’t still enjoy walking, scooting or cycling to school or being active outdoors during the school day. We will simply put on a coat and wellies, grab an umbrella or hat and carry on enjoying the great outdoors!
Each pupil will receive a participating record sheet with stickers and we hope as many families will join in as possible.
We will also be taking part in Time to Shine Day on Friday 23rd November to promote the Be Bright, Be Seen initiatives promoted by the Hampshire Road Safety Team. We will be having a 'be bright, be seen' non school uniform day to highlight the importance of being seen to traffic now the darker mornings and evenings are here. Further information will follow.
Our Headteacher's Luncheons are back in full swing! Every Tuesday, Mrs Howlett and Miss Andrews will meet with invited pupils over lunch to feedback any ideas and points of view the children have to make the school an even better place.
As you can see the children are very proud to take part in this and thoroughly enjoy having lunch with Mrs Howlett. The pupil voice of the school is very important to Newtown C of E Primary.
Our talented pupils at Newtown C of E Primary School performed in the annual Rock Steady End of Year Show this morning.
Children, staff and parents were treated to a vast array of musical numbers which were enjoyed by all. The songs from the Greatest Showman were a particular highlight as well as the Year R & Year 1 band's own song which they had written entitled Elephant, Alligator, Donkey!
Well done everyone!
It was with great delight that our current year 6 pupils gave the most amazing performance at their Year 6 Leavers Show entitled 'The Greatest Show'.
Parents, Carers, Staff and Pupils were treated to a variety of talents and acts that made everyone in the room burst with pride.
Following the show, parents and supporters were treated to an Afternoon Tea, served by the pupils, where everyone could all celebrate together the achievements of the children across their Newtown years.
Congratulations year 6!
This week has been Equalities Week and Year 2 have been learning about diversity in sport. After learning about the Paralympic and Invictus games, we were visited by Loyd Durham, a keen local runner who had an operation to remove the lower part of his right leg following a bike accident.
Loyd told us all about his recovery and physio since his operation 21 weeks ago, and how he is now running again. Loyd competed in the Gosport Golden Mile this year and last weekend he competed in a triathlon! The children loved seeing his medals and listening to Loyd talk about his aspirations for the future. The children were very impressed that Loyd is hoping to compete in the 2020 Paralympics in Tokyo.
Loyd showed us his special new blade which he will soon use for running to make him run ever faster. The children enjoyed asking him lots of questions about it and were very inspired by his motivation and optimism.
Thank you Loyd for coming to visit us and good luck!
This week is national Cystic Fibrosis Week. Newtown C of E Primary School participated in 'Wear Yellow Day' on the 22nd June to raise awareness for people across the UK affected by cystic fibrosis.
Cystic fibrosis is a life-shortening genetic condition affecting more than 10,800 people in the UK. One in 25 people carry the faulty gene that causes the condition, usually without even knowing. The Cystic Fibrosis Trust is the only UK-wide charity fighting for a life unlimited by cystic fibrosis by investing in research to tackle the condition and campaigning for life-changing medicines to one day beat it for good.
On Tuesday we had a perfect summer’s day for our annual Sports Day. It was lovely to see so many parents, guardians and friends there to cheer on the children.
Groups of children from mixed houses competed in various games such as sprint, penalty shootout, skipping and hockey skills. The winning house was Beech with a whopping 3197 points! Second place went to Elm with 2492, third place was Oak with 2430 and finally, Chestnut with 2314 points.
Well done to everyone who took part, including the adults in our parent/teacher race.
Royal wedding fever has caught on in many places, including Newtown C of E Primary School!
Students and staff arrived this morning dressed as Prince and Princesses, Kings and Queens, with other dressed very patriotically in red, white and blue to celebrate the wedding of HRH Prince Harry and Meghan Markle.
Donations to HRH Prince Harry and Meghan’s nominated wedding day charities totalled £219.45. Well done everyone!
At lunch-time the whole school will take part in a street-party themed lunch on the playground with royal crown cookies for dessert! Pupils have made bunting, table mats and flags for the day as part of their art projects.
Everyone at Newtown C of E Primary School is very excited and hope that it will be a very memorable day for everyone.
Throughout this academic year we have embarked on a project to improve positive attitudes within the school for our children, staff and parents. The project has enabled us to build on the good work already going on here at Newtown and to gain the status of being an ‘Outstandingly happy school’. This has involved further embedding the language of our ethos values and learning behaviours so they become an integral part of all that we do.
We have also looked at having a positive mind set, where anything is possible and our children can achieve anything if they put their minds to. This has been built around the analogy of being a ‘2%er’. This involves being in the top 2% of people who are consistently upbeat and positive. This can at times be hard work and take practice however, a ‘2%er’ is someone who is solution focussed, energetic and have a can do attitude, raising the level of optimism and energy in those around them. The analogy of a mood hover has also been introduced which involves someone who is stuck in a cycle of negativity, who like to moan, and suck out the energy of others around them.
Throughout the happiness project we have also developed our community links with the church, introduced our family worship, Head and Deputy lunch, developed links between the children across the school and improved the presentation of the school by introducing the ‘Golden Broom’. A huge part of the project is to develop the well-being curriculum for all our children and staff which we intend to create a ripple of positivity throughout the community.
The project will continue to evolve. We are looking to further develop links with the Church by introducing
pen-pals with year 5 and elderly members of the congregation, introduce a buddy system for new children and further develop pupil voice through their various roles and responsibilities.
On Wednesday 16th May, Andy Cope the author of the book ‘Art of Being Brilliant’ returned to Newtown where the children presented our project and how far the school had come. We are delighted that we were accredited with being an ‘Outstandingly Happy school’. We are the first school in Hampshire to work with Andy Cope and are very happy to achieve this award.
We have received an email from The Young Pea Chef of the Year competition organisers, thanking us for our entries from Riley Fuller and Tom Turner, Year 1 Robins, Tyler-Jai Thomas, Year 2 Sparrows and Brodie Turner, Year 5 Badgers. They very much enjoyed reading them and said the presentation of Riley’s Vanilla and Lime Cake recipe was lovely!
From the email we received -
"We would like to thank you for submitting your recipes, which were full of creativity, enthusiasm and delicious British peas! We have received hundreds of pea-inspired recipes from budding young chefs across the country and the creativity and quality of this year’s entries has been outstanding."
All the recipes went through an intensive judging process, which included judges TV chef Rachel Green and experts from The British Growers Association, Fen Peas, The Ocado Foundation, Birds Eye and Greenyard Frozen. Unfortunately, none of our pupils were shortlisted this year however, we will be celebrating our entrants in this week's celebration assembly and presenting them each with a Newtown bookshop voucher.
Well done!
