Good luck to all those doing their SATs this week!

Welcome to our Governors’ section.

Please find below details of how our Governing body is structured, including the names, categories, responsibilities and terms of appointment for each Governor.

Newtown has a dedicated team of Governors who are either elected as Parent Governors, Community Governors, Local Authority Governors or staff Governors. They remain on the Governing Body for a period of four years and may be re-elected if no other candidates come forward. The Chair and Vice-Chair are elected annually. Vacancies for Governors are communicated through the School to the Parent Body and Hampshire County Council (HCC) Governor Services Team. All Governors are members of the Full Governing Body (FGB) and have full voting rights. They meet collectively once per month. Each Governor has a clear role in supporting and holding the school to account. These areas are reviewed annually. Each Governor reviews aspects of school improvement each term to monitor progress towards identified goals. This ensures that Newtown’s Governors ‘know their school’ and are able to challenge the school to achieve the very best outcomes for children.

They have no pecuniary interests to declare, but these are reviewed on a monthly basis.

Newtown CE Primary School’s Board of Governors is seeking a new parent governor

Parent governors are elected by other parents at the school. Any parent, or carer, of a registered pupil at the school at the time of election is eligible to stand for election as a parent governor. Parent governors may continue to hold office until the end of their term of office even if their child leaves the school.

The Governing Body brings a broad range of substantial expertise to Newtown Primary School and our primary aim is to promote high standards of educational achievement in the school.  The role of the Governing Body is to:

  • ensure clarity of vision, ethos and strategic direction;
  • support the head teacher, but hold her to account for the educational performance of the school and its pupils;
  • oversee the financial performance of the school and made sure its money is well spent.

In addition, all of the governors have a lead governor role with specific responsibilities. Current vacant roles include Finance/Health & Safety or a general interest/experience in education. Part of the Finance/Health & Safety role would involve ensuring the school site is fit for educational purposes including the upkeep of the buildings, facilities, contents and the grounds, in addition to monitor the financial procedures and performance of the school.

Other roles would include monitoring the teaching and learning provision of the children in certain classes or subjects and the progress of these children throughout their time at Newtown CE Primary School.

For more information on this role, please see the Parent Governor pdf below.
