Weekly Prayers
Each week, we share a school prayer linked to our collective worship and Christian values. These prayers provide an opportunity for our school community to pause, reflect and pray together.
We invite children and their families to use these prayers at home, helping to strengthen the partnership between school, home and church as we grow together in faith.
Prayers:
Each of collective worships start with our school prayer.
This is said as 1 child from each class brings a battery-powered candle to our altar at the front of the hall. We have 3 coloured candles at the front, 1 to represent each of our Christian Ethos Values: Love, Courage and Friendship
At Newtown C of E Primary, each collective worship ends with a prayer, linked to what we have been talking about during collective worship.
Monday – World event or weekly theme
Tuesday – Singing
Wednesday – In class. Mostly following ‘Difference’ scheme
Thursday – Family collective worship, lead by Haven Church
Friday – Celebration
We encourage you to discuss with your child what has been the focus of the collective worship and read through the weekly prayer with them.
There is also a weekly prayer written by the Church of England which you could use at home if you wish. You can find these here: https://www.churchofengland.org/prayer-and-worship/worship-texts-and-resources/common-worship/common-material/collects-and-post-26
Example of Tuesday prayer for after singing:
Dear God,
Thank you for the gift of music and for the joy of singing together today. Thank you for the voices you have given us and the fun we shared in this room.
As we finish this collective worship help us to carry this music in our hearts. May the kindness and joy we felt while singing together show in everything we say and do today. Bless our teachers, our friends, and our school.
In Jesus' name, we pray.
Amen.
Example of Wednesday prayer for in-class collective worship:
Dear God,
We thank You for the community we live in. Fill our hearts with curiosity and a desire to learn more about those around us.
Help us to see the needs and joys of our neighbours and to find ways to support and uplift one another.
Amen.
Example of Friday celebration prayer:
Dear God,
Thank You for bringing us together today to celebrate the amazing gifts and talents You have given us.
We also thank You for all the hard work, kindness, and wonderful achievements of this past week—both big and small.
As this week comes to a close, please keep us safe over the weekend. Rest our minds, recharge our hearts and bring us back next week ready to learn, care and grow together.
Amen.
We also have a short reflection at the end of each collective worship. This allows children to explore their own spirituality through the way that they view themselves, others, the world and what is beyond that. The reflection will be linked to one or more of the following:
- Self (being a unique person and understanding selfperception)
- Others (how empathy, concern, compassion and other values and principles affect relationships)
- World and Beauty (perceiving and relating to the physical and creative world through responses to nature and art)
- Beyond – relating to the transcendental and understanding experiences and meaning outside the ‘everyday’
Here are our weekly prayers. These are said in our Monday collective worships. The aim of these is to help children learn more about the world that they live in and reflect on the impact this has on their own spirituality. Whilst these are planned in advance, the theme may be changed if there is something specific that the school community as a whole would benefit from.
Date: 21st September
Theme: Saying sorry and trying again (Yom Kipper)
Prayer:
Loving God,
Thank you for teaching us about forgiveness, kindness and new beginnings.
Help us to think carefully about our words and actions.
Give us courage to say sorry when we need to and help us to make things right with others.
Teach us to be gentle, honest and ready to begin again.
May our school be a place of peace, respect and love.
Amen.
