At Newtown Church of England Primary School, we believe that spirituality is an important part of every child's development. Spirituality is not something that is taught in a single lesson; it is woven throughout the life of our school and is nurtured through our Christian vision and values of Love, Courage and Friendship.

We recognise that spirituality is about helping children to develop a sense of awe and wonder, reflect on their experiences, explore life's big questions, and understand their place in the world. It is about encouraging children to think deeply about themselves, their relationships with others, the world around them and, for many, their relationship with God.

As a Church of England school, we provide opportunities for all children, regardless of their faith background or beliefs, to develop spiritually in an inclusive, supportive and respectful environment.

What Does Spirituality Mean at Newtown?

We encourage children to explore spirituality through four key areas:

Self

Understanding who we are, recognising our strengths and challenges, reflecting on our thoughts and feelings, and developing confidence and resilience.

Others

Building positive relationships, showing kindness and compassion, valuing diversity, and developing empathy and understanding for those around us.

World

Experiencing awe and wonder in the natural world, appreciating beauty, caring for the environment, and exploring the wider world and our place within it.

Beyond

Considering life's deeper questions about meaning, purpose and belief. For many children this may include exploring their relationship with God and understanding the Christian faith, while respecting the beliefs and experiences of others.

Opportunities for Spiritual Development

Spiritual development is nurtured throughout school life in many different ways, including:

• Creative experiences through art, music, drama and literature

We encourage children to notice and reflect upon the moments that make them stop and think, whether that is through a beautiful piece of music, an act of kindness, a question about the world, a moment of achievement, or a sense of wonder in nature.

Reflection Spaces

Every classroom at Newtown has a dedicated prayer and reflection space where children can pause during the day to think, pray or reflect. These areas provide a calm and welcoming environment where children can take time away from the busyness of school life.

Children may choose to use a prayer pebble while saying a prayer or reflecting on something important to them. Once they have finished, they place the pebble into a basket as a symbol of their prayer, thought or reflection.

These spaces encourage children to develop their own spirituality and provide opportunities for stillness, gratitude and personal reflection throughout the school day.
