Safeguarding through curriculum

At Newtown CE Primary School, safeguarding is a fundamental priority and is embedded throughout all aspects of school life. In addition to policies and procedures that protect children, safeguarding is also actively promoted through the school curriculum. We believe that teaching pupils how to recognise risks, stay safe, and seek help is an essential part of their development.

Safeguarding through the curriculum ensures that pupils develop the knowledge, skills, and confidence they need to keep themselves safe both in school and in the wider community. These themes are primarily taught through Personal Development Learning (PDL) education, Relationships and Health Education (RHE), and other subject areas where relevant.

Within PDL and RHE lessons, pupils learn about a range of safeguarding topics that are appropriate for their age and stage of development. These include understanding healthy friendships, respectful relationships, personal boundaries, and recognising when something feels unsafe. Children are encouraged to talk openly about their feelings and to understand the importance of seeking help from a trusted adult if they are worried or uncomfortable.

Online safety is also an important aspect of safeguarding taught through the curriculum. Pupils learn how to use technology responsibly, understand the potential risks of the internet, and know what to do if they encounter something that makes them feel unsafe online. This helps pupils to develop safe digital habits as they grow and become more independent users of technology.

Safeguarding themes are also reinforced across other areas of learning. For example, discussions about healthy lifestyles and wellbeing may take place during science or physical education, while topics such as respect, tolerance, and understanding differences may be explored through religious education and collective worship. These opportunities help pupils develop a strong moral understanding and awareness of how to treat others with kindness and respect.

At Newtown CE Primary School, we also aim to create a safe and supportive learning environment where pupils feel confident to share concerns. Staff regularly remind pupils about who they can speak to if they need help and encourage a culture of openness and trust. Children are taught that their voices are important and that adults in school are there to listen and support them.
