The Year R Team
Year R Transition Events – Beginning June 2020
A message from Mrs Howlett, Headteacher...
Once again, I am delighted to welcome you to Newtown C of E Primary School and cannot wait for your child to start their educational journey with us in September.
I have been able to speak with many of you via telephone to keep in touch in this current situation, as we would have normally had a welcome meeting. It has been a pleasure speaking with each one of our new families. I have left messages if I have not been able to speak with you, so please feel free to call back.
I have now received new guidance from the Department for Education and I can now start to plan transition events for the year R pupils starting with us in September as long as we can adhere to the social distance regulations.
Thank you to all those that attended our first transition Welcome Event on 10th June. It was wonderful to finally meet so many of you and to give you all a goody bag! Don't worry if you couldn't make it. We have organised a follow-up welcome event on Wednesday 17th June between 4pm and 4:30pm. Myself, the Early Years team and key members of staff will meet you and give each child a welcome Goody Bag to begin the transition process. This socially distanced event will be held outside in the front gardens of the school and will give everyone a good opportunity to finally meet. In the event of wet weather, we will move into the hall. Please ensure you keep to the 2-metre markers when collecting your goody bag.
In addition, as part of the transition programme, we hope to hold social distanced story-telling picnic events, dependent on Government guidelines; where a maximum of 6 families can come and meet the EYFS team telling stories and have a picnic. More details about these events will follow shortly.
We are also planning a new entrants BBQ in the autumn term.
Please view our EYFS introduction video.
Home visits and pre-school visits would also have normally taken place in the summer term with your child starting full time at school at the beginning of September. Realistically it is highly unlikely that this will be able to happen; therefore my proposal, dependent on government guidelines is that individual 'garden' meetings with your child’s class teacher (at Newtown C of E Primary School, in person) will occur week beginning 14th September 2020.
We have then planned, that in the weeks beginning 7th and 21st September there will be a number of settling in events for your child to begin school. Once your child has attended these settling in events, our plan is that all children will start school on Monday 28th September. Please be aware that this is subject to change. For your child's individual dates and times to visit school, please contact Mrs Watson, EYFS Learning Leader, via the school office on 02392 584048. We have posted each individual starting school plan to all parents and carers on Thursday16th July 2020.
If your child has additional needs, please call the school office to arrange a telephone appointment with Mrs. Watson, EYFS Learning Leader, to discuss your child’s needs ready for September.
Registration and Enrolment
Thank you to all those families who have provided enrolment evidence of both the address used in your application and your child’s DoB (this is usually your child’s birth certificate or passport and a bank statement or utility bill). If you have not already done so, please photograph this evidence and email the documents to firstname.lastname@example.org Please also either post or email a copy of your child’s completed registration form and all other forms within your enrolment pack to the school office. Original copies will still need to be presented when the COVID 19 restrictions are lifted.
Our transition programme is not as comprehensive as it would normally be, however I do hope you will join us at the events listed below, they are extremely important for a smooth transition for your child. All transition events have been fully risk assessed and are in line with current Department for Education guidance. When on site please remember to keep to the 2-metre social distance regulations and be responsible for keeping your children with you at all times.
If you have not received your first choice school and would like to speak to Mrs Howlett, Headteacher about securing a place at our Ofsted graded GOOD school, please telephone the school office on 02392 584048.
We also have limited places in other year groups so please get in touch to discuss your child starting school at Newtown.
During this current COVID19 period, the school office is manned 8:00 am - 3:00 pm daily, so please telephone or email email@example.com

Starting a new school is a big step for pupils and parents, not only in terms of education but also as it involves going to a new location with an often unfamiliar journey.
This toolkit has been designed to support parents and pupils through the process of planning their new routes to school over the summer holidays and, as much as is possible, making them active, safe and sustainable.
There are separate downloadable booklets for pupils starting in Year R, Year 3 and Year 7, with two brand new humorous and historical films to enjoy, commissioned especially for this project. There are also lots of ideas for follow-up activities and links to many fantastic resources to support active travel.
The My Journey website also has lots of information for parents on the following:
- Social distancing on the school run
- Walking for wellbeing
Please visit the website pages below for all the information.
