Welcome to Year 5!
Year 5 – Miss Phillips and Miss Powell
Year 5 are learning about the Ancient Greeks in their current project.
To kick-start the project and hook us in, we took part in an Ancient Greek day where we learnt how to read and count in Greek and competed in some Olympic games in the afternoon!
The highlight of the day was definitely the food tasting. We tasted and evaluated a variety of Greek foods including: tzatziki, olives, pitta bread and feta cheese.
During this project, we will learn about the history of Ancient Greece and their legacy; design, make and paint authentic Greek pots, and write our own myths using a hero and a beast we created in English.
In Guided Reading, we are continuing our study of Goodnight Mister Tom, by Michelle Magorian. The book is proving to be a hit with all the children, who are enjoying learning about the changes that the shy and deprived main character under goes, to become a social and well-liked boy.
In maths, we have developed our understanding of fractions, and their decimal and percentage equivalents, along with geometry and measurement.
In Geometry, we are learning about regular and irregular polygons and in measurement we have been drawing comparisons between metric and imperial measures.
We are very excited to launch our ‘longitudinal’ science study of Stoke’s Bay this half term. This will involve a very exciting walk to Stoke’s Bay on Tuesday 23rd May.
