Y4 Otters and Rabbits

Welcome to Year 4!

Autumn 1

Year 4 – Rabbits and Otters- Miss Wandless and Miss Golding.

This term, Year 4 will be taking part in a topic titled ‘Raiders and Invaders’.

To kick-start the topic, the children were visited by a warrior from the past. He was worried that the children of the future would forget about the Anglo-Saxons and Vikings and he set Year 4 the challenge of finding out as much as they can and asked them to report back to him.
Our classroom was then visited by a menacing dragon one evening after we had all gone home. We think he was looking for treasure but didn’t seem to find any! To make sure we’re prepared if he returns, in Guided Reading, the children will be building on the reading skills they developed in Year 3 as we study ‘How To Train Your Dragon’ by Cressida Cowell.

Our English will then focus on putting ourselves into the shoes of a warrior. We will be writing setting descriptions of an Anglo-Saxon settlement and instructions on how to catch a dragon.

Did you know many of the places across England were named by the Anglo-Saxons? In Geography we will be exploring the impact that Anglo-Saxons had on counties, cities and towns across England.

In Science, we will be considering what plants need to grow. This will include a hands-on experiment where we will provide information for our warrior friend on the most efficient way to grow crops.
All of these curriculum areas will be drawn together in our P4C sessions where we will be considering how it would have felt to be an Anglo-Saxon or a Viking as they travelled from their homes to new lands. We’ll explore the themes of migration and belonging.

Alongside all this, we’re very lucky to be taking part in weekly ukulele lessons with Mrs Graham from the Hampshire Music Service. Look out for our Christmas concert towards the end of the term

All this will happen in conjunction with our daily Maths sessions, weekly PE, Computing and French.
